  1. Discussion Forum - 20 points
  2. Lesson Plan for Differentiating Instruction in Reading and Content Areas - 100 points

The pre-service teacher/candidate will participate in group pre-planning discussion in the Day 5 Discussion Forum mirroring those of grade level meetings to plan for instruction that uses increasingly complex print and digital text, embeds assessment, includes scaffolding, and provides re-teaching when necessary while including the major components of reading and scaffolding ideas in each area. Please review the items under “Handouts” and Bookmarks” as well as complete your own research if necessary.

Each pre-service teacher/candidate will collect and synthesize scaffolding instructional ideas that will be appropriate for a lesson plan including scaffolding during the research and forum discussion. The pre-service teacher will then develop a Lesson Plan Unit for Differentiating Instruction in Reading and Content Areas, using the FSC lesson plan template, based on one of the major reading components. The lesson plan may need to be completed and turned in the following day due to the discussion forum on Day 5 completion. Be sure the following are addressed:

  • Use multiple standards and objectives, including at least one content area standard.
  • Objectives need to include essential reading comprehension skills.
  • Appropriate technology is used; not just the teacher, but the students are using it too.
  • Text is complex and in both print and digital formats.
  • Include scaffolding for students having difficulty in any of the components of reading.
  • Provide re-teaching to individuals and small groups
  • Embed both formative and summative assessments.
  • Include effective decoding practices and instruction
  • Include effective encoding (writing) practices and instruction
  • Include instructional methods for developing reading fluency
  • Include instruction for increasing vocabulary acquisition in the content area.
  • Include instruction for facilitating comprehension monitoring.
  • Implement appropriate and allowable instructional accommodations as specified in the Individual Education Plan or 504 Plan when differentiating instruction for students with disabilities.
  • Modify assessment and instruction for students with significant cognitive disabilities while maintaining high expectations for achievement that reflect appropriate levels of access to general education instruction.
